The Royal Canal - Boating/Walking/Cycling
Co Longford can now be reached via the Royal Canal which meanders its way from Spencer Dock in Dublin through Counties kildare, Meath and Westmeath before entering Co Longford and linking with the longest river in Ireland, the Shannon, at Richmond Harbour in Clondra. The Royal Canal takes the visitor through some of the most beautiful and unspoilt countryside that Ireland has to offer. Boating, angling and canoe polo are just some of the activities that are now enjoyed on various stretches of the waterway. The towpath that runs the length of the canal (90 miles)has been designated The Royal Canal Way and is a National Way Marked Way.It is a unique walkway that allows the visitor to meander at their own pace from Dublin to County Longford through Abbeyshrule, Ballymahon, kenagh, Killashee, and on to Clondra village. The walker has the choice of branching off into Longford town or continuing on to Clondra, whichever they prefer. Much of the canal paths close to the villages have been enhanced in recent years. Being a canal bank walk, the gradient is never steep, making it an ideal introduction to long distance walking. Abbeyshrule Airfield is located in South County Longford near the town of Ballymahon and outside the picturesque village of Abbeyshrule. Flying into Abbeyshrule the runway is tarmac, 800m in length and due to its location has unlimited unclustered air space. Most single and light twin aircraft can land at Abbeyshrule. Prior permission required for landing.
