Longford International Marathon


The Longford International Marathon is an annual event which attracts competing athletes from around the world. It has earned the title of the ‘Friendly Marathon in the Heart of Ireland’ and as Irelands best value Marathon has a half marathon, marathon relay and a 39 mile ultra marathon. Taking place over a weekend in August the event brings to life the town of Longford, which sees local supporters as well as friends and families of the competitors, come together to cheer on those taking part in County Longfords biggest sporting event of the year.

The Marathon weekend begins on Saturday morning at 10am from St. Christophers at Battery Road, Longford, with a short breakfast run around Longford Town. This run is open to all entrants in the marathon, and breakfast is served after the run back at St. Christophers. All runners can collect their numbers on Saturday from 1.00pm to 6.00pm at Race Headquarters in Longford. Signage  around the town directs competitors to the correct location and new entries will also be accepted at Race Headquarters on Saturday. Sunday morning sees the marathon starting from Main Street near the Longford Arms Hotel the point at which it also ends.

The course is well marked and each mile is posted. Regular Water stations, every 3 miles, is  available along the way.  Entertainment on the day is courtesy of local musicians who entertain both the runners and spectators alike.  On the evening of the marathon a post race party takes place at 9pm when traditional Irish music and craic is enjoyed amidst comparisons of  PBs, aches and pains, injuries and medals. All profits of the Longford International Marathon are donated to St. Christophers Services Longford.
